Smiley Greevins is a young boy with a talent for trouble, living in the small outback town of Murrumbilla. His father, Bill, works as a drover and is often away, leaving Smiley's mother to run the household while coping with her husband's drinking. Smiley sets his mind on owning a bicycle and starts taking on whatever work he can find to save the money for it, though his plans keep landing him in scrapes.
The film is a comedy directed by Anthony Kimmins, who also wrote the screenplay with Moore Raymond and produced it. Kimmins had by this point in his career moved between British comedies and adventure stories, and here he turned to Australian source material with a largely Australian and British cast. Colin Petersen plays Smiley, with Bruce Archer as his friend Joey, Ralph Richardson as Rev. Lambeth, John McCallum as Jim Rankin, Chips Rafferty as Sgt. Flaxman and Jocelyn Hernfield as Miss Workman. It was made by London Films Productions and runs 97 minutes.
On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 6.6 from 225 votes, a modest but steady level of approval that suggests a small, settled audience rather than a widely seen title.
