Nights of Cabiria
Short description
Nights of Cabiria follows a sex worker named Cabiria in and around Rome. Early on, her boyfriend robs her and leaves her in the water to die; she survives, and the rest of the film watches her pursue a life of her own. She is tough and quick-tempered with the women she works alongside, yet she keeps a childlike openness and a stubborn faith that one of the men she meets will give her the love and respect she wants. A night spent in the company of a well-known actor and, later, a courtship by a shy, gentle man convince her that her luck has changed, though the world around her rarely rewards her good faith. The film takes the character from one disappointment to the next, ending on a note of renewed hope.
Federico Fellini directed and wrote the screenplay with Tullio Pinelli and Ennio Flaiano, and Dino De Laurentiis produced this Italian-French co-production. It was Fellini's sixth film as director, arriving between The Swindle and La Dolce Vita. Giulietta Masina plays Cabiria, with François Périer, Franca Marzi, Amedeo Nazzari, Aldo Silvani and Dorian Gray among the credited cast of 22.
On IMDb the film holds 8.1 out of 10 from over 51,000 votes, and on TMDB it scores 8 out of 10 from a much smaller vote count. A critics' rating of 8.9 out of 10 from 45 reviews places it above both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- As claimed by Federico Fellini's assistant, Dominick Delosh, actor François Périer was cast as Oscar so that the film could receive additional funding as a joint project with France.
- Director Federico Fellini (1920-1993) filmed producer Leo Cattuzzo as the “man with the backpack” and wanted to leave these shots in the film, but producer Dino De Laurentiis (1919-2010) objected. He believed that the scene slowed down the overall rhythm of the film and eventually simply stole the film reel with that scene from the editing room. According to De Laurentiis, about 5-7 years after the film's release, Fellini called him and began to plead with him to return the reel so he could reinsert it into the film. By this time, the film was already considered a classic, and De Laurentiis agreed.
- The film's screenplay served as the basis for the plot of the musical "Sweet Charity" (Bob Fosse, 1969).
- Leo Cattotzo was filmed in the role of the man with the backpack, but another producer, Dino De Laurentiis, objected.
