The Last Taboo is a documentary that examines the culture of silence regarding homosexuality in professional men's football. While acceptance has grown in other areas of society, the film suggests that being openly gay remains a rarity and a taboo within the sport. Through personal accounts, the film explores the internal and external struggles faced by players who choose to come out, including the conflict between their identity and their career aspirations. Featured stories include those of Thomas Hitzlsperger, Collin Martin, and Matt Morton, as well as Marcus Urban, who faced the loss of his dream to play in the Bundesliga. The film also looks back at Justin Fashanu, the first professional player to break this taboo in 1990, via testimony from his niece, Amal Fashanu.
Directed by Manfred Oldenburg, the film is the third in a chronological sequence of his works, following Kroos and Die Kölner Silvesternacht - Die Nacht der Ohnmacht. Produced by Leopold Hoesch and Broadview TV in Germany, the production features a cast of individuals appearing as themselves, including Peter Tatchell. Released on February 15, 2025, the documentary has a runtime of 94 minutes.
