Minami is a young yakuza whose erratic behavior makes his boss uneasy. When a senior gang member named Ozaki begins to show signs of mental instability, the boss orders Minami to take him to Nagoya and get rid of him. Ozaki dies before the job can be carried out, and his body vanishes, sending Minami in search of it. His search leads him to an isolated hotel whose staff and atmosphere seem wrong, and he comes to suspect he has walked into something far stranger than a missing corpse.
Takashi Miike directed the film, working from a screenplay by Sakichi Sato. It is the eleventh of the forty-two films he directed in chronological order, arriving between One Missed Call and Yakuza Demon, both from 2003. Yūta Sone plays Minami, Show Aikawa plays Ozaki, and Kimika Yoshino appears as Female Ozaki, with Shōhei Hino, Keiko Tomita and Harumi Sone in supporting roles. The film runs 130 minutes and mixes crime, horror, mystery and comedy.
On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 out of 10 from 244 votes, while a critics' rating stands at 6.4 out of 10 from 57 reviews, placing the two closer together than is often the case for this director's work.
