Johatsu - Into Thin Air is a documentary that examines the Japanese social phenomenon of people who voluntarily vanish from their lives to start over elsewhere. These individuals, known as the evaporated, often flee from criminal issues, unhappy relationships, or intense societal pressure. The film looks at the role of night moving companies that specialize in helping clients disappear without a trace, while exploring the resulting isolation and the struggle for identity faced by those who vanish and the people they leave behind.
The film was directed by Arata Mori and Andreas Hartmann, who also served as the producer and screenwriter. A joint production between Germany, Switzerland, and Japan, the project involved ARTE, BR, SRF, and Ossa Film. The documentary has a runtime of 86 minutes. Since its release in September 2024, it has received a rating of 6.9/10 on TMDB based on 17 votes.
