Runaway Radio

Runaway Radio is a documentary about 101 KLOL, a Houston-based rock radio station. The film explores the station's history starting in 1970, tracing its transition from a progressive rock outlet where disc jockeys had full creative control to an album-oriented rock station where the presenters often became more famous than the music they played. Through various perspectives, the film examines the influence of the medium on its listeners and artists, while addressing how pressures from the music industry, the federal government, and the tech sector eventually impacted the station.

Directed and produced by Mike McGuff along with Jeffrey Brown, the film was produced by Silver Head Films and Big Day Pictures. It features appearances by several musicians acting as themselves, including Lyle Lovett, Sammy Hagar, Melissa Etheridge, Dusty Hill, Carmine Appice, and Doug Pinnick. The documentary has a runtime of 83 minutes and was released on February 27, 2024.
