Set during the decline of the shogunate, this comedy follows Saheji, a resourceful socialite who becomes trapped in an upscale brothel after failing to pay his debts. To survive the surrounding political instability and social unrest, he takes on various errands for the other residents, including samurai and merchants, while ensuring he receives a fee for his services.
The film was directed by Yūzō Kawashima, who also co-wrote the screenplay alongside Shōhei Imamura and Hisashi Yamanouchi. This production marks the eighth film in Kawashima's directing career, following previous works such as Suzaki Paradise: Red Light District and Hungry Soul. Produced by Nikkatsu Corporation, the movie features a cast of 32 credited performers, including Frankie Sakai as Inokori Saheiji, Sachiko Hidari, Yôko Minamida, Yūjirō Ishihara, Izumi Ashikawa, and Toshiyuki Ichimura.
