Hellraiser: Inferno follows Joseph Thorne, a Los Angeles detective whose professional life and private conduct have both come apart. While investigating the murder of a former classmate, he takes a strange puzzle box from the crime scene and works out its mechanism, opening a doorway to the demon Pinhead. People close to Thorne begin dying, and his attempts to cover his tracks draw him toward a criminal figure known as the Engineer.
The film is the first feature directed by Scott Derrickson, who wrote the screenplay with Paul Harris Boardman; it sits at the start of a directing career that continued with The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Sinister, Doctor Strange and The Black Phone. Craig Sheffer plays Thorne, with Nicholas Turturro, James Remar, Noelle Evans, Sasha Barrese and Doug Bradley, returning as Pinhead, among a credited cast of 42. Made for about 2 million dollars by Dimension Films, Miramax and Neo Art & Logic, it runs 100 minutes.
Audience scores place it in mixed territory: on IMDb it holds 5.4 from around 21,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.4 from over 500. A small sample of critics rated it considerably lower, at 3.3 from nine reviews.
