Short description
In Los Angeles, Max Carlyle makes a good living directing commercials and has a happy home life with his wife, Mimi, and two children. When Carlyle travels to New York City to visit his friend Charlie, who has been diagnosed with AIDS, he has repeat run-ins with a beautiful woman, Karen, and eventually sleeps with her. Though he goes home the next day and doesn't return until a year later, Carlyle's infidelity still lingers.
What's left behind the scenes
- To discuss the project, Mike Figgis and Robert Downey Jr. agreed to meet at a restaurant in Beverly Hills. The actor arrived two hours late, and when he finally appeared, it turned out he was wasted and high, with a firearm in his bag. Figgis was shocked, but spoke with the actor anyway. Downey Jr., who had lost significant weight due to his drug addiction, was still hoping for the role of Max. Instead, Figgis offered him the role of Charlie, a character dying of AIDS. This offer shocked Downey Jr., but he looked at himself in the mirror, snorted a line of cocaine, and accepted the role of Charlie.
- The original screenplay was written by Joe Eszterhas, but it amounted to a few loosely connected sex scenes. When Mike Figgis took over the project, he rewrote almost the entire script, and Eszterhas eventually decided to have his name removed from the credits altogether.
- In the scene featuring an argument between the spouses played by Wesley Snipes and Ming-Na Wen, the reflection of a crew microphone can be seen in the mirror hanging on the wall.
