Set in 1916 during World War I, this music drama follows the efforts to maintain a choral society in Yorkshire. As the conflict drains the town of its adult men, the demanding Dr. Henry Guthrie takes charge of the group. He focuses on recruiting local teenagers and other residents to keep the choir alive. The community finds solace in collective music while the young men face the prospect of being called to serve in the army.
