Where My Memory Began

This documentary explores the origins of Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone. The narrative centers on the journey of freed Black people who crossed the Atlantic Ocean four centuries ago to reach Africa. After arriving and resting beneath a tall cotton tree, the settlers established a community they initially called Freedom Town. The film follows an elder named Ballu as he attempts to recall and preserve this historical legacy.

Directed and written by Priscillia Kounkou Hoveyda, the film was produced by Ishmael Beah through the production company Haus of Salone. This short project has a runtime of nine minutes and features Ballu Turay in the role of the elder. The film was released on February 9, 2024.
