Short description
In London, Karl Verloc maintains a quiet life as a cinema owner alongside his wife and her young brother. Beneath this domestic facade, Verloc carries out acts of sabotage and terrorism against the city. As police suspicion grows, a detective begins monitoring the cinema and forming a connection with Verloc's wife. The situation turns dangerous when Verloc involves his brother-in-law in his activities by asking the boy to deliver a package containing a time bomb.
Directed by Alfred Hitchcock, this crime thriller is the eighth of 43 films he directed, following The 39 Steps and preceding Secret Agent. Produced by Michael Balcon with a screenplay by Charles Bennett, the film features a cast including Sylvia Sidney, Oskar Homolka, Desmond Tester, and John Loder.
The movie has been well received by audiences and reviewers. It holds a 7/10 rating on IMDb based on 21,000 votes and a 6.7/10 rating on TMDB from 383 votes. Film critics gave the movie a slightly higher score of 7.6/10 across 11 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- Hitchcock's previous film was also titled "The Secret Agent." To avoid confusion with Hitchcock's 1936 film of the same name, the next film was titled "Sabotage." In 1942, Hitchcock filmed "Saboteur" (English: "Saboteur"), and confusion still arose.
- "Sabotage" was banned in several countries, as it was considered a hint for terrorists.
- The film was released in the US under the title "A Woman Alone".
- The role of Ted Spencer, played by John Lodge Hitchcock, was initially offered to Robert Donat, but he was unable to participate in the filming due to asthma attacks.
