Port of Shadows

A deserter from the French colonial army arrives in Le Havre hoping to leave the country by ship. In the fogbound port, a place of shady characters and few way out, he meets Nelly, a seventeen-year-old girl living under the control of her guardian Zabel, a man mixed up with the local underworld. Among the docklands haunts where she is a familiar face, Jean also crosses paths with the petty criminal Lucien and with the people who give him shelter. He and Nelly are drawn to each other, but Zabel's hold over her and the resentment Jean stirs in the men around the port close off the escape he is looking for.

Marcel Carné directed Port of Shadows, which came before his Children of Paradise in 1945, from a screenplay by Jacques Prévert. Jean Gabin leads as Jean, with Michel Simon as Zabel, Michèle Morgan as Nelly, Pierre Brasseur as Lucien, Édouard Delmont as Panama and Raymond Aimos as Quart Vittel. A French production from Ciné-Alliance, it runs 93 minutes and blends crime, drama and romance.

The film has held up well with viewers: on IMDb it scores 7.7 from about 11,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 from a much smaller pool. Critics rate it higher still, 8.8 from 29 reviews, a gap that suggests the film's craft and atmosphere have impressed professional viewers more strongly than the general public.
