Micronations is a documentary that explores the world of self-declared sovereign states. The film examines the motivations behind creating these small entities, focusing on themes of identity, community, and the human desire to belong. Through a look at the passports, constitutions, and borders established by these individuals, the film investigates the concept of sovereignty and the nature of creating one's own country.
The movie was directed by Joe Kowalski, who also served as a producer and co-writer alongside Tom Zavertnik. This project is the third of four films directed by Kowalski in 2026, following Prettier in Whittier and preceding The Joker of Freetown. The production was handled by the United States company SUBSTANCE. The documentary features appearances by Kevin Baugh, Travis McHenry, Carolyn Shelby, and Phil Pillin, all appearing as themselves. The final runtime of the film is 97 minutes.
