Blind Chance follows Witek, a young Polish medical student whose future is uncertain. He decides to interrupt his studies and take a train to Warsaw, but as he runs for it, the film branches into three separate versions of what his life might become. In one path he is drawn toward the communist authorities; in another he joins a student movement challenging the regime; in a third he turns to religion for meaning. Each version is set off by the same ordinary moment at a railway station, and each carries its own consequences for his ideals and his relationships.
Krzysztof Kieślowski directed and wrote the screenplay. The film stands third among the thirteen features he directed in chronological order, following No End and preceding A Short Film About Love. Bogusław Linda plays Witek, with Tadeusz Łomnicki, Zbigniew Zapasiewicz, Bogusława Pawelec, Marzena Trybała and Jacek Borkowski among the credited cast of forty-two.
Made in Poland in 1981 and held back by censorship before its release in 1987, the drama runs 114 minutes. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.5 out of 10 from 251 votes, a modest but consistently positive response for a film whose fragmented structure and political backdrop have kept it in discussion.
