Short description
Flashback centres on Huey Walker, an ageing former activist who has spent years on the run from the authorities. When he is finally caught, the FBI assigns young agent John Buckner to escort him by train to face charges. The two men could hardly be more different, yet their journey goes wrong almost immediately, and the mismatched pair soon finds itself on the wrong side of small-town law enforcement as well.
The film was directed by Franco Amurri and written by David Loughery, with Marvin Worth producing for Paramount. It was Amurri's first feature as director, followed four years later by Monkey Trouble. Dennis Hopper plays Walker and Kiefer Sutherland plays Buckner, with Carol Kane, Paul Dooley, Cliff DeYoung and Richard Masur among the supporting cast.
Released in February 1990, Flashback mixes action and comedy with a crime story. Its theatrical run brought in about 6 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.2 from roughly 6,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from around 106 votes. A critics' score of 4.9 from 15 reviews places it below the audience ratings.
What's left behind the scenes
- At the Oakland train station, Dennis Hopper (1936-2010) befriended two boys of Asian descent, who are also shown in the film – they wave to Hopper's character. During pre-production, he made time to play with the boys, so their reaction to him on screen is genuine and not acted.
- The first American film by Italian director Franco Amurri, who was an assistant to Federico Fellini during the filming of “City of Women.”
- Dennis Hopper's character says, "It's not enough to go to a video store and rent 'Easy Rider' to become a rebel." Hopper played the main role in and directed this film.
