Set during the early 1960s, this drama takes place against the backdrop of rising tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union. The story follows the crew of the K-3, the first Soviet nuclear submarine, as they attempt a historic mission to surface exactly at the North Pole. This project follows Kott's previous work on A Close Embrace, Fortress of War, and Dear People, and precedes his later titles Angels of War and Golem. The cast features Andrey Merzlikin as Zhivtsov, Evgeny Mironov as Morozov, and Elena Sever as Filatova, with Sergei Losev playing Khrushchev.
Produced in Russia by several companies including Okko Studios and Cinema Fund, the movie had a budget of 680 million USD. Since its release, it has received a moderate reception from viewers, currently holding a rating of 5.7/10 on IMDb based on 166 votes.
