This documentary examines the lives of women from various professional backgrounds who lived in East Germany. Featuring individuals such as politicians, artists, and scholars, the film explores how these women pursued their ambitions and sought recognition within a repressive state. While the government claimed to have achieved gender equality, the subjects describe the reality of living under a patriarchal system. The narrative focuses on how their experiences in the GDR shaped their identities and self-image.
The film was directed and written by Torsten Körner. It serves as a sequel to his previous work, Die Unbeugsamen, shifting the focus from the Federal Republic of Germany to the other side of the Iron Curtain. The cast includes Katja Lange-Müller, Ulrike Poppe, Tina Powileit, Gabriele Stötzer, Doris Ziegler, and Brunhilde Hanke, all appearing as themselves. Produced by ZDF, 3sat, and Broadview, the movie has a runtime of 104 minutes and was released on August 29, 2024.
