This documentary examines Polish daily life leading up to the declaration of martial law on December 13, 1981. Using archival recordings, the film looks back roughly sixteen months prior to that date to explore the social atmosphere and the complicated events that preceded the government's decision. The narrative highlights the absurdity of the era, contrasting the tragedy of state repression and tanks in the streets with the farce of everyday survival, such as long lines for basic goods and the sale of livestock in shoe stores.
The film was directed and written by Tomasz Wolski, who previously directed An Ordinary Country in 2020. Following this 2024 release, Wolski directed The Big Chief in 2025 and How to Conquer the World in 2026. Produced by Anna Gawlita, the project was supported by production companies including MFF, PISF, TVP, and MIK. The final cut has a runtime of 84 minutes.
