Short description

A woman accepts a job as a housekeeper in a New York City high-rise, only to discover that the building has a history of unexplained disappearances. She finds herself trapped in a community that may be controlled by a satanic cult and must fight to survive the night to avoid becoming a sacrifice. The story blends elements of horror and action with dark humor.

Directed by Kirill Sokolov, this is the second film in his career following Why Don't You Just Die! from 2018. The screenplay was written by Sokolov and Alex Litvak. The movie features an ensemble cast including Zazie Beetz, Patricia Arquette, Myha'la, Paterson Joseph, Tom Felton, and Heather Graham. A total of 33 actors are credited in the cast, supported by a crew of 154 people.

Produced by Warner Bros. Pictures, Skydance, New Line Cinema, and Film Afrika, the film was a joint production between the United States and South Africa. With a budget of 20 million USD, the movie earned 19 million USD at the worldwide box office. On TMDB, it holds a rating of 6.9/10 based on 1,131 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The scene with the burning axe in the main character's hands was filmed with all precautions: the actors involved were given clothes made of fire-resistant materials, and Zoey Deutch also received a fire-resistant wig.
  • The film's title translates as "They Will Kill You."
  • Working on the film was difficult for the actors, especially Zazie Beetz. Tom Felton, who played the role of Kevin, brought a ukulele to the set and sang playful songs to cheer up Beetz after a tough day of filming.
  • While working on the project, director and screenwriter Kirill Sokolov drew inspiration from his own past: he and his wife moved to another city and settled in a high-rise with hundreds of apartments. They used to joke with each other, "What if this is the headquarters of some kind of cult?" Later, he watched Roman Polanski's horror film "Rosemary's Baby" (1968) and found a certain similarity between the plot and his own situation.
  • The most difficult part for Zazie Beetz was filming in the rain. The rain was artificial, but the water was cold, as warm water would have fogged up the camera lenses.
