Short description
Set in New York City on March 31, 1943, this historical drama focuses on the emotional struggle of lyricist Lorenz Hart. While visiting Sardi's bar for a date with a student named Elizabeth, Hart grapples with declining self-esteem and personal instability. This internal conflict peaks as his former creative partner, composer Richard Rodgers, celebrates the opening night of the successful musical Oklahoma!, the first project Rodgers completed without Hart's collaboration.
The film was directed by Richard Linklater and serves as the 21st of 22 films in his career, following Hit Man and preceding Nouvelle Vague. The screenplay was written by Robert Kaplow. What's left behind the scenes
- Ethan Hawke (who played Lorenz Hart) first read the script about ten years before work on the film began and expressed his desire to act in the movie even then. Director Richard Linklater considered Hawke too young for the role and did not want to age Hart using makeup, so Linklater shelved the project for a while.
- Ethan Hawke is significantly taller than Lorenz Hart, so during filming, camera angles had to be carefully chosen and other tricks employed to make the actor appear shorter.
- To better capture Lorenz Hart's appearance, Ethan Hawke partially shaved his head and wore a wig.
