Split Second
Short description
Split Second is set in a London of 2008 that has been left partly submerged after a global environmental disaster. With much of the city under water and order breaking down, a killer is at work, leaving victims with their chests torn open and their hearts removed. Detective Harley Stone, a policeman known for his unorthodox methods, takes on the case, driven in part by the murder of his partner. What he is pursuing turns out not to be an ordinary criminal.
Tony Maylam directed the film, his second feature after The Burning (1981), from a screenplay by Gary Scott Thompson, with Laura Gregory producing. Rutger Hauer plays Stone, and Kim Cattrall appears as Michelle. The cast also includes Michael J. Pollard, Alastair Duncan, Alun Armstrong and Pete Postlethwaite, among forty credited performers.
The British production had a budget of 7 million US dollars and took about 5 million at the worldwide box office, so it did not recover its costs in cinemas. Audience responses place it at the middle of the scale: on IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from roughly 18,000 votes, and on TMDB it also stands at 6 out of 10, from about 375 votes, indicating a modest but persistent following for this mix of science fiction, action and horror.

- Filming took 8 weeks.
- The film is set in 2008.
- The film takes place in a partially flooded London, but the water level in the Thames is normal. This is noticeable when the flood barrier is shown, which is always open.
- Due to stress, director Tony Maylam was unable to complete work on the film, so Ian Sharp and others finished it instead. Sharp filmed the final action scene in the subway and some other episodes, and was therefore credited as second director in the final credits.
- Discussions about what the creature should look like continued even after filming had begun and was in full swing, so in the end Steven Norrington was left with only three weeks to create it.
- Gary Scott Thompson wrote the script with Harrison Ford in mind, but he was pleased with the choice of Rutger Hauer for the lead role. Hauer was also happy to work with Maylam because he really liked the script.
