Jack Butler is an engineer at a Detroit auto plant whose world is upended when he loses his job. While he searches for new work, his wife Caroline lands a well-paid position at an advertising agency, and the couple decides he will stay home to run the household and look after their three children. The arrangement is new to him, and his attempts at cooking, cleaning and childcare turn into a series of mishaps. Caroline, meanwhile, advances quickly in her career, and the change in their roles strains the marriage as each adjusts to an unfamiliar life.
Stan Dragoti directed the comedy from a screenplay by John Hughes. It was Dragoti's second feature as director, following Love at First Bite in 1979 and preceding The Man with One Red Shoe in 1985. Michael Keaton plays Jack, with Teri Garr as Caroline; Frederick Koehler, Taliesin Jaffe and Courtney-Jane White appear as the children. Lauren Shuler Donner, Lynn Loring and Bill Damaschke produced, and the film was made by 20th Century Fox with Sherwood Productions and Aaron Spelling Productions.
Released in July 1983, the film runs 91 minutes and took about 65 million dollars worldwide, a strong result for a comedy of its period. Audiences rate it 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb, from roughly 31,000 votes, and 6.6 out of 10 on TMDB, from a few hundred votes, a consistent moderate level of approval across both.
