Weightless is a drama about Gian, a professor of ethnomusicology who suffers from sudden amnesia. Struggling with fragmented memories and a sense of despair, he survives a suicide attempt, leading his daughter Miriam and grandson Elyas to move into his home. Although Gian does not recognize his daughter, she helps him discover a diary he wrote in his youth. The entries describe a brief but intense romance with a woman named Leila, and these memories of love both increase his suffering and motivate him to reclaim his past.
The film was directed by Sara Fgaier, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Sabrina Cusano and Maurizio Buquicchio. This project follows her 2014 film, 9x10 Ninety. The movie features Andrea Renzi as Gian, with Emilio Francis Scarpa appearing as the younger version of the character, and Sara Serraiocco in the role of Miriam. Produced in Italy by several companies including RAI Cinema and Dugong Films, the movie has a runtime of 94 minutes.
