Watchmen takes place in an alternate 1985, where costumed crimefighters once helped shape American history but have since been pushed aside by a law banning their activity. The Cold War is nearing a breaking point, with the Doomsday Clock symbolising the standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union. When Edward Blake, a former masked adventurer, is killed, Rorschach, the only one of the group still operating, refuses to accept it as an ordinary crime. His enquiries lead him back to his retired colleagues, among them Dan Dreiberg, Laurie Jupiter and Adrian Veidt, while the near-omnipotent Jon Osterman has withdrawn from Earth altogether. What begins as one death turns into something aimed at everyone who once wore a mask.
Zack Snyder directed the film, the third of the fifteen features he has made and the one that followed 300 and preceded Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole. David Hayter and Alex Tse wrote the screenplay, and the large cast of 132 credited performers includes Malin Åkerman, Patrick Wilson, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode, Jackie Earle Haley and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
Released in March 2009, the production carried a budget of 130 million US dollars and returned 185 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 across roughly 609,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.4 from a far smaller pool of about 10,000. A critics' rating of 6.7 from 304 reviews sits below both audience scores.
