Short description
Eddie Morra is a struggling New York writer who cannot get a single page of his commissioned novel written, and his girlfriend Lindy has run out of patience with him. A chance encounter with Vernon, a former dealer turned pharmaceutical contact, gives Eddie access to NZT, an experimental drug that sharply expands his mental capacity. Under its influence his memory, focus and reasoning reach levels far beyond the ordinary, and he quickly turns that edge into money and influence, drawing the attention of the powerful financier Carl Van Loon. The drug also brings dependence, unpleasant side effects and dangerous people who want it for themselves.
Neil Burger directed the film, his second feature after The Illusionist and the one preceding Divergent, The Upside, Voyagers, The Marsh King's Daughter and Inheritance. Leslie Dixon wrote the screenplay and produced alongside Scott Kroopf and Ryan Kavanaugh. Bradley Cooper plays Eddie, with Robert De Niro as Van Loon, Abbie Cornish as Lindy, Andrew Howard as Gennady, Anna Friel as Melissa and Johnny Whitworth as Vernon. The film runs 106 minutes.
Made for 27 million dollars, it earned 162 million worldwide, a strong return. On IMDb it holds 7.4/10 from 645,000 votes, and on TMDB 7.2/10 from 11,755 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.3/10 from 202 reviews, below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- The apartment where Bradley Cooper's character lives is the same one Matthew Vaughn used in the comedy "Kick-Ass" (2010).
- While working on this film, Bradley Cooper's father was terminally ill with cancer, and the actor was very grateful that filming took place in his hometown of Philadelphia, allowing him to visit his father every evening.
- Leslie Dixon sold the screenplay on the condition that it would not be rewritten by other screenwriters (which is a rather rare condition in the world of cinema).
- The film is based on the novel “Dark Fields” (2001) by Alan Glynn.
- At the beginning of the film, at the 7th minute, when Eddie was talking to his “worst” acquaintance, that acquaintance’s hair constantly changed position.
- When Eddie goes to submit the first part of the book – his shirt is untucked, in the next shot – he exits the building (shirt tucked in), then – he goes home – shirt is untucked again.
- Shia LaBeouf was originally cast in the lead role, but the actor was forced to withdraw from the project after being involved in a car accident and injuring his arm.
