Short description

The Green Elephant is a Russian production that blends elements of comedy, drama, horror, and thriller. The story focuses on two Russian soldiers held in a confined military setting. As they are imprisoned together, the characters face severe physical and psychological abuse, leading to a breakdown of their mental states. The narrative explores the social and psychological tension between the men as they struggle within the confines of their cell.

Svetlana Baskova wrote and directed the film, which was the first of two listed works in her career, followed by The Head in 2004. Produced by Supernova Group, the movie features a cast including Vladimir Yepifantsev, Aleksandr Maslaev, Anatoly Osmolovsky, and Sergey Pakhomov. The film has received a moderate reception from viewers, holding a 5.3 rating on IMDb based on 3,900 votes and a 5.8 rating on TMDB from 110 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • A large number of scenes and lines from the film featuring Pahomov's character became internet memes and served as the basis for webcomics, photoshopped images, and humorous videos on YouTube; the line from the movie, 'Bro! I brought you some food,' gained particular notoriety.
  • Vladimir Epifantsev voluntarily agreed to take rotten blood into his mouth for the sake of a striking shot.
  • At the moment when Sergei Pakhomov screams, clutching the legs of the dead Vladimir Epifantsev and looking upward, an organ is heard playing a track by the band Iron Butterfly. Birds take flight against a red background—footage from the film 'One Hundred Days Before the Order'.
