Saaransh

Saaransh is a 1984 Indian drama about an elderly couple, B.V. Pradhan and his wife Parvati, who are grieving the death of their only son. He was killed during a mugging on the streets of New York, and his death leaves them not only heartbroken but also without the income that supported them. Forced to find a way to get by, they rent out a room in their Bombay flat to a young woman named Sujata Suman, an aspiring Bollywood actress. Her arrival brings a new presence into their home and into their lives as they try to live with their loss.

The film was directed by Mahesh Bhatt, who also wrote the screenplay with Sujit Sen, and was produced by Tarachand Barjatya for Rajshri Productions. It was the first feature Bhatt directed, standing at the start of a filmography that continued through the 1980s, 1990s and beyond. Anupam Kher plays Pradhan and Rohini Hattangadi plays Parvati, with Soni Razdan as Sujata and supporting turns from Madan Jain, Suhas Bhalekar and Vijay Kashyap.

On IMDb the film holds an 8.1 rating from around 2,100 votes, while on TMDB it has a 6.8 from a much smaller number of votes. The contrast reflects how strongly the film is regarded by the audiences who have seen it, particularly in its home country, where it remains a reference point for the director's early work.
