Casey Carlyle is a gifted high school student whose mother has her future mapped out: Harvard, then a career in science. Casey has other ideas, though she keeps them to herself. She is drawn to figure skating, and she admires three accomplished skaters her own age, among them Gen Harwood. When Gen invites her to train alongside her, Casey joins the group coached by Gen's mother, Tina, a former champion whose own competitive career faded long ago. Tina now pours her ambitions into Gen, but she comes to see that Casey may be the more promising talent, which puts her at odds with her instincts as a parent. Casey, meanwhile, must decide whether to defy her mother's plans and chase a place in the sport.
Released in 2005, the film was directed by Tim Fywell from a screenplay by Meg Cabot and Hadley Davis, and produced by Bridget Johnson. Michelle Trachtenberg plays Casey, with Kim Cattrall as Tina, Joan Cusack as Casey's mother, and Hayden Panettiere as Gen. A large credited cast and crew filled out the production, which had a budget of 25 million dollars and took in 28 million worldwide.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.1 from around 31,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.4 from roughly 965 votes. A critics' rating of 5.7 from 106 reviews places it close to the audience scores.
