Short description

A hopeless romantic named Bear uses a magical object to make his crush, Nikki, fall in love with him. While his wish is granted, the resulting affection quickly turns into a dangerous and frightening obsession. Bear soon discovers that obtaining his heart's desire comes with a sinister and unexpected price.

This horror thriller was written and directed by Curry Barker, following his 2022 film The Chair. The movie features Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette in the lead roles, supported by a cast including Cooper Tomlinson, Megan Lawless, Andy Richter, and Haley Fitzgerald. A total of 49 actors and 89 crew members are credited in the production, which was produced by Blumhouse Productions, Capstone Pictures, Tea Shop Productions, and Under the Shell.

The film was a significant commercial success, earning 514 million USD at the worldwide box office. It has been well received by viewers, maintaining a high rating of 8.2/10 on TMDB based on 5,628 votes.

What's left behind the scenes

  • While developing the design of the magic wand, artist Vivian Gray drew inspiration from the skeletons of cacti.
  • Director Curry Barker voiced the One Wish Willow customer service representative himself: he recorded the lines on his phone while editing and changed them to fit the cut.
  • During the project's development, the design and shape of the box that held the magic wand were changed several times.
  • The idea of the wish came to Barker in July 2023 while he was watching the episode of The Simpsons featuring a monkey’s paw.
  • Cassell’s Music in San Fernando, the music store where the characters work, closed a year after filming.
  • Barker initially considered playing Bear himself and shot a test scene with Cooper Tomlinson in the role. In the film Tomlinson plays Ian.
  • One of the most difficult scenes to film was the one where Bear makes a wish and Nikki returns to the car. Director and screenwriter Curry Barker intentionally prolonged the scene to make the audience empathize with Nikki.
  • After the film came out, fans began visiting Little Toni’s pizzeria and the Green Man crystal shop in Los Angeles, where it was shot.
  • The party scene could not be reshot: the house where it was filmed burned down in the Southern California wildfires of January 2025.
  • To obtain an R rating, shots of punctured heads had to be removed from the film. These shots were present in the version screened at the Toronto International Film Festival.
  • The film's budget was modest, so the scene involving the breaking of the car window was filmed without stunt doubles. Indie Navarrette performed the stunt herself, wearing a wig and a helmet as a safety precaution.
  • Barker was offered $2 million to rewrite the script and make Bear a hero. He declined.
  • When creating the magic wand, artist Vivian Gray and the props team used a gag pen similar to one Barker had as a child. They found a similar pen, took it apart, and inserted the clicking mechanism into the prop magic wand.
  • Director and screenwriter Currie Barker later mentioned that some of the dialogue in the script was written by his father, Jeff Barker.
  • The rights to the film were bought for $14–15 million, a record for a genre film at the Toronto International Film Festival.
  • To fit the shoot into 20 days, the director and the cinematographer 3D-scanned the locations in advance and planned the shots on digital models.
  • The first kiss scene was filmed on the first day of shooting, and the first take made it into the movie.
  • While working on the script, Curry Barker envisioned that Nikki was initially attracted to Bear. Barker believes that if Bear had confessed his feelings to her, she might have reciprocated.
  • The original version of the script ended with Nikki's suicide, but the producers asked for the finale to be changed.
  • Director and screenwriter Currie Barker's tendency to shoot long takes created certain difficulties during editing. He had to learn how to maintain the plot's pacing during post-production.
  • Producer Christian Mercury usually leaves casting decisions to the directors, but in this case, he insisted that Indy Navarretti, whom he knew from her work in the action film 'Jackpot,' be cast in the lead female role.
  • The filming of Sarah's death (Megan Lowless) proved to be difficult. It was necessary to break glass made of sugar glaze. The first piece of prop glass was accidentally broken while being carried to the car. The second take was ruined by a piece of polystyrene that entered the frame. The scene was only captured on the third take, which used the last remaining piece of prop glass.
  • Before filming, the cast watched Hereditary together, and Inde Navarrette also watched Midsommar and Pearl.
