A group of amateur filmmakers who call themselves the Fuck Bombers are pursuing two goals: making movies and getting one of their number, Mitsuko, into the spotlight. Their chance arrives when two rival yakuza bosses, Muto and Ikegami, become entangled in their project. Muto wants his daughter Michiko to become a star, and the crew's ambitions collide with the gangsters' feud. What begins as a film shoot slides into a real underworld war, with the violence spilling over into the production itself.
Sion Sono directed and wrote the screenplay, and the film stands as the eleventh of the nineteen features he has directed in chronological order, following Himizu in 2012 and preceding Venice 70: Future Reloaded in 2013. Jun Kunimura plays Muto and Shinichi Tsutsumi plays Ikegami, with Hiroki Hasegawa as the director Hirata and Fumi Nikaido as Mitsuko Muto. Thirty-seven performers are credited in all. Made in Japan by King Records, T-JOY, GANSIS and KH Capital, it runs 130 minutes and combines action, comedy and drama.
Released in September 2013, the film took in roughly a million dollars worldwide, a modest return. Audiences rate it 7.1 out of 10 on IMDb from about 9,500 votes, while on TMDB it holds 7.3 from a smaller base of 333. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10 from 41 reviews places it close to the audience scores, indicating a solid rather than divisive reception.
