The Truth About Charlie

Regina Lambert, on holiday in Martinique and weighing whether to end her brief marriage to the secretive Charlie, meets a charming stranger named Joshua Peters. When she returns to Paris, she finds her apartment ransacked and her bank account drained, and she learns that Charlie has been murdered. Several men are soon pursuing her, convinced she knows where a large sum of money has gone, and Joshua turns up offering help. Unsure who to trust among the people around her, Regina tries to work out what her husband was really involved in.

Jonathan Demme directed and co-wrote the film, the eleventh of the fourteen features he directed in chronological order, coming after Beloved and before The Manchurian Candidate. The screenplay is credited to Demme, Peter Stone and Jessica Bendinger, and Demme produced with Edward Saxon and Peter Saraf. Thandiwe Newton plays Regina, with Mark Wahlberg as Joshua, Tim Robbins as Hamilton Bartholomew, Christine Boisson as Commandant Dominique, LisaGay Hamilton as Lola Jansco and Ted Levine as Emil Zadapec. Twenty-seven cast members and fifty-five crew are credited.

Released in October 2002, the film runs 104 minutes. Its ratings are modest and consistent across audiences and critics: 5.1/10 from 133 reviews, 4.7/10 from around 11,000 votes on IMDb, and 4.9/10 from 199 votes on TMDB.
