Short description
Doomsday is set in a Britain devastated by a virus known as Reaper. After the disease kills hundreds of thousands, the government seals off the infected region behind a wall and abandons those left inside. Around three decades later the virus appears again in London, and the authorities send a team of specialists into the quarantined zone to find a cure. Major Eden Sinclair leads the mission, which must contend with a landscape cut off from the outside world. Rhona Mitra plays Eden, with Bob Hoskins as Bill Nelson, Adrian Lester as Sergeant Norton, Alexander Siddig as Prime Minister John Hatcher, David O'Hara as Michael Canaris and Malcolm McDowell as Dr. Marcus Kane.
Neil Marshall wrote and directed the film, which followed his Dog Soldiers and The Descent and preceded Centurion, Tales of Halloween, Hellboy, The Reckoning, The Lair, Compulsion, Duchess and Keep Young and Beautiful. It was produced by Steven Paul and Benedict Carver for Scion Films, Rogue Pictures, Internationale Filmproduktion Blackbird Dritte and Intrepid Pictures, and shot as a co-production between Germany, the United Kingdom, the United States and South Africa. Made for about 30 million dollars, it took roughly 22 million dollars worldwide, less than its budget.
Audience response has been mixed: on IMDb it holds 5.9 out of 10 from around 82,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 5.9 out of 10 from about 1,450 votes. A critics' rating of 5.2 out of 10 from 74 reviews places it somewhat below those audience scores. The film runs 108 minutes.
What's left behind the scenes
- Approximately 700 extras participated in the scene at the intersection, most of whom were South Africans of European descent.
- A 2008 Bentley Continental GT Speed was used in the car chase scene. This was not a product placement (Bentley does not participate in such programs), so the filmmakers simply purchased three of these cars for approximately $150,000. One car was accidentally driven into a narrow gorge, the second was wrecked during stunt filming, while the third remained undamaged. The filmmakers were amazed by the car’s durability. After everything it went through, it only required a repaint and some cosmetic repairs, with everything else remaining intact.
- Many stunts are performed in the film, but unforeseen situations occurred during the filming of only two of them. Once, a motorcyclist was dragged along by his motorcycle when he was supposed to simply roll away. The stuntman was unharmed. In the second case, Sol was hitting a man in the face and accidentally broke his nose on the second take.
- At the beginning of the film, the DDS team boards a freighter. It can be noticed that the ship has a Russian name: the words “Pervyy raz” (First Time) are written on the side in large black letters.
- The APCs were assembled with genuine steel plates and windshields made of armored glass to ensure authenticity. The design process took 4-5 weeks, and assembly took another 10 weeks. Two vehicles were built from scratch. Initially, there were plans to purchase vehicles, but it turned out that building them from scratch would be cheaper.
- Filming took place from February 9th to May 2007 in South Africa and the United Kingdom.
