Short description

The Motherload follows a Vietnamese American mother and daughter, Jessca and Kim, as they struggle to repair their strained relationship. To bridge the gap between them, they satirically reenact scenes from famous movies about the Vietnam War. This process explores the realities of the diaspora through a narrative that blends their personal history with two surreal plotlines. These inventive elements introduce levels of absurdity to highlight the difference between how the Vietnamese diaspora views itself and how the rest of the world perceives them.

The film was co-directed by Van Tran Nguyen and Alex Derwick, who also co-wrote the screenplay. For both directors, this project follows their previous work on Erie County Smile from 2021. The production was a collaboration between GladThing and companies from Vietnam, Canada, and the United States. The lead roles are played by Van Tran Nguyen as Jessca and Sang Tran as Kim. This adventure comedy drama has a runtime of 92 minutes.
