Come from Away is a filmed recording of the Broadway musical of the same name, captured live during a performance. The story is drawn from real events: on September 11, 2001, when United States airspace closed after the terrorist attacks, 38 flights were diverted to Gander, a small town in Newfoundland, Canada. Stranded passengers and crew, called "come from aways" by the locals, were taken in by residents who housed, fed and looked after them for several days. The musical follows both groups as they move from shock and uncertainty toward a shared sense of community, with a small ensemble playing multiple townspeople and travellers.
Christopher Ashley directs, following his earlier film work on Jeffrey and Diana: The Musical, both released before this one. The cast includes Jenn Colella, Joel Hatch, Tony LePage, Caesar Samayoa, Astrid Van Wieren and Jim Walton, most performing several roles each. Jennifer Todd and Bill Condon are credited as producers, with Entertainment One, RadicalMedia and Junkyard Dog Productions behind the release.
The film runs 107 minutes and mixes comedy with drama. Audience response has been strong: it holds an 8.5 rating on IMDb from around 4,700 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.5 from a much smaller voter pool, indicating far greater attention on the former platform.
