Superman: Doomsday

Superman: Doomsday is an animated action film in which a deadly creature is accidentally released from confinement by LexCorp, forcing Superman into the most dangerous fight of his life as Metropolis's protector. The story draws on the 1990s DC Comics storyline in which the Man of Steel confronts a monster capable of destroying everything in its path. Adam Baldwin voices Superman and Clark Kent, with Anne Heche as Lois Lane, James Marsters as Lex Luthor, John DiMaggio as Toyman, Swoosie Kurtz as Martha Kent and Tom Kenny as Robot.

The film was released in September 2007 as the first of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line from Warner Premiere and Warner Bros. Animation. Lauren Montgomery, Bruce Timm and Brandon Vietti directed from a screenplay by Duane Capizzi, with Timm producing, and the production had a budget of about 4 million dollars. It runs seventy-five minutes. For Montgomery this was her first feature as director, ahead of Wonder Woman and Green Lantern: First Flight; for Timm it followed Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, and for Vietti it preceded Batman: Under the Red Hood.

Audience response has been steady rather than enthusiastic over the years. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 25,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.7 out of 10 from a much smaller sample of 723 votes. A critics' rating of 5.8 out of 10 from seven reviews places it below both audience figures, suggesting reviewers were less taken with the film than viewers were. The modest budget and the direct-to-video release kept its scale in line with the studio's other animated superhero features of the period.
