Buta is a drama from Azerbaijan about a lonely seven-year-old boy living with his grandmother in a mountain village. He forms a friendship with an elderly liquid soap seller who was once in love with his grandmother and lost her. The old man's advice and companionship help the boy through the hardships of his life. Meanwhile, his grandmother is weaving a carpet in memory of the boy's mother, working a pattern known as a buta, which stands for love. Inspired by her work, the boy decides to build a buta of his own from rocks and stones, high up on the mountain top.
Released in March 2011 and running 98 minutes, the film was directed by Ilgar Najaf, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Ramiz Fataliyev and produced it with Khamiz Muradov. It was his first feature, followed by Pomegranate Orchard in 2017. The cast includes Tofig Aliyev as the boy, Rafig Azimov as the grandfather, Kimyakhanim Dashdiyeva as the grandmother, and Elnur Karimov among the supporting players.
On IMDb the film holds a rating of 6.2 from 129 votes, a modest score that suggests a small but settled audience rather than a widely seen release.
