Short description
Trolls is an animated musical adventure about a community of small, perpetually cheerful creatures whose lives revolve around singing, dancing and celebrating. Their carefree existence is shattered when the giant Bergens, who believe eating a Troll is the only route to happiness, raid their village and carry off many of its inhabitants. Poppy, the relentlessly optimistic daughter of the Troll leader, sets out to bring her friends home. For help she turns to Branch, a gloomy, cautious Troll who refuses to sing and wants nothing to do with her plan. The two make an unlikely pair, and their journey takes them far beyond the only world Poppy has known.
The film was directed by Mike Mitchell, whose earlier credits include Sky High, Shrek Forever After and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water; it sits between that last title and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part in his filmography. Glenn Berger and Jonathan Aibel wrote the screenplay, and Gina Shay produced. Anna Kendrick voices Poppy and Justin Timberlake voices Branch, with Zooey Deschanel, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Christine Baranski and Russell Brand among the supporting cast.
Released in 2016 and running 92 minutes, the film cost about 125 million USD and took in roughly 347 million USD worldwide. It holds a 6.4/10 rating on IMDb from around 100,000 votes and a 6.6/10 on TMDB from far fewer, while critics gave it 6.3/10 across 161 reviews, so audiences and reviewers landed in similar territory.
What's left behind the scenes
- The first toy troll was created in 1958 by Thomas Dam (1909-1986) from Denmark.
