Gintoki Sakata is flung into a future shaped by his own absence, an Edo thrown into disorder and stripped of the Yorozuya as it once was. Shinpachi and Kagura have grown up separately, and the bonds that once held their circle together have come apart. To set things right, Gintoki has to take on the largest job he has ever faced, one that could be the Yorozuya's last.
The film is an animated adaptation of the Gintama manga by Hideaki Sorachi, directed by Youichi Fujita from a screenplay by Akatsuki Yamatoya. It was the first Gintama film Fujita directed; he returned to the franchise for three compilation features released between 2023 and 2025. The voice cast is led by Tomokazu Sugita as Gintoki, with Daisuke Sakaguchi as Shinpachi, Rie Kugimiya as Kagura, Akira Ishida as Kotarou Katsura, Susumu Chiba as Isao Kondo and Kazuya Nakai as Toshiro Hijikata, among 30 credited performers.
Released in Japan in July 2013, the film took in roughly 16 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 8.3 out of 10 from about 3,600 votes, and on TMDB 8 out of 10 from around 153 votes, placing it among the better-received entries in the series.
