Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon follows several Los Angeles residents whose separate lives gradually intersect. Mack, a lawyer, is driving home at night when his car breaks down in a rough part of the city, and a group of strangers surrounds him. He is rescued by Simon, a Black auto mechanic who happens to be passing, and the two men begin a friendship that crosses lines of race and class. Around them, other characters face their own turning points: Mack's wife, Claire, finds an abandoned baby while out running, and Davis, a film producer and friend of Mack's, reconsiders the direction of his life after he survives a violent robbery.

The film was directed by Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote the screenplay with Meg Kasdan. It arrived in the middle of a run of films he directed that began with Body Heat in 1981 and continued through The Big Chill, Silverado, The Accidental Tourist and I Love You to Death. Danny Glover and Kevin Kline play Simon and Mack, with Steve Martin as Davis, Mary McDonnell as Claire, Mary-Louise Parker as Dee and Alfre Woodard as Jane. Around forty-nine cast members and seventy-eight crew members are credited.

Released at the end of 1991, the film took in about 41 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from roughly seventeen thousand votes, while on TMDB it has 6.4 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10, drawn from thirty-eight reviews, places it slightly above the audience scores.
