Short description

On the Border is a documentary exploring the city of Agadez, Niger, which has served as a central hub for Saharan trade for centuries. The film focuses on the Tuareg people, who traditionally earned their living by transporting people and goods across the desert. This historical practice clashes with modern European migration policies and new laws that label these transporters as smugglers. Through the accounts of a trader, a journalist, and a mayor, the film examines the impact of international security investments and drone surveillance in a region lacking economic opportunities, all leading up to a military coup in 2023.

The production is a co-production between Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, involving Mira Film, CORSO Film, and framelab filmproduktion. It was directed by Gerald Igor Hauzenberger and Gabriela Schild. Released on March 19, 2026, the film has a runtime of 103 minutes.
