Two street children known as Black and White survive in Treasure Town, a district whose streets they know better than anyone. Black is tough and quick to fight, while White is gentler and dreamy. They make money however they can and drive off intruders from neighbouring areas. Their world is upended when a shady businessman joins forces with local yakuza to remake the district into an amusement park, and the two boys find themselves fighting to protect the only home they have.
The film is based on Taiyou Matsumoto's manga and mixes traditional animation with 3D techniques. Michael Arias directed it, his first feature, followed years later by Harmony. Anthony Weintraub wrote the screenplay, and Eiko Tanaka, Masao Teshima and Eiichi Kamagata produced it for Japanese studios that include Aniplex and STUDIO4℃. The voice cast includes Kazunari Ninomiya, Yu Aoi, Yûsuke Iseya, Kankuro Kudo, Min Tanaka and Rokuro Naya, with 28 credited cast members and 116 credited crew.
Made on a budget of about four million dollars, the film runs 103 minutes and was released in December 2006. On IMDb it holds 7.5 out of 10 from roughly 15,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 7.4 from around 447 votes. A critics' rating of 7.2 from 22 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a broadly consistent reception.
