Colony
Short description
Colony is a South Korean action, horror and science-fiction film centred on Kwon Se-jeong, a biotechnology professor who attends a conference that collapses into chaos when a fast-mutating virus is released. The authorities seal the complex, trapping Se-jeong and a small group of survivors inside, where the infected undergo terrifying transformations and the threat keeps growing. What begins as a scientific gathering turns into a fight to stay alive in a sealed building.
The film is directed by Yeon Sang-ho, who wrote the screenplay with Choi Gyu-seok, and it follows Train to Busan, Seoul Station, Psychokinesis, Peninsula, JUNG_E, The Ugly and Revelations in his filmography; another film, Paradise Lost, follows it. Jun Ji-hyun leads as Se-jeong, alongside Koo Kyo-hwan as Seo Young-cheol, Ji Chang-wook as Choi Hyun-seok, Kim Shin-rock as Choi Hyun-hee, Shin Hyun-been as Kong Seol-hee and Go Soo as Han Kyu-seong, among a credited cast of 26. Kim Yeon-ho produced for Wow Point, Smilegate Entertainment and Midnight Studio.
Released on 21 May 2026 and running 123 minutes, Colony has an audience rating of 8.1 out of 10 on TMDB, based on 836 votes, which points to a strongly positive response from viewers.
What's left behind the scenes
- Yeon Sang-ho invited avant-garde choreographers and tasked them with creating zombie movements that were not identical, yet remained coordinated. As an example, he cited the movement of ten fingers while playing the piano—every finger moves differently, but they all serve a common purpose.
- According to director and screenwriter Yeon Sang-ho, the primary inspirations for the main character (played by Jun Ji-hyun) were Amuro Ray from the anime 'Mobile Suit Gundam' and Shinji Ikari from the anime 'Evangelion'.
- Filming took place in the city of Tangjin.
- Actor Choi Woo-jin, who played the teenage version of Song Young-chul, looked so much like actor Koo Kyo-hwan (who played the adult character) as a child that a theory began to spread on the Korean internet that the younger version of the character had been created using neural networks.
- In many interviews, director and screenwriter Yeon Sang-ho admitted that he wanted to depict humanity's fear of artificial intelligence and the loss of individuality in this film.
