Song of the South

Song of the South is set in the American South after the Civil War, where seven-year-old Johnny arrives at his grandmother's cotton plantation believing he is there for a holiday. He soon learns that his parents are separating and that his father, a journalist, is returning to Atlanta while Johnny stays behind with his mother and grandmother. Upset by the news, Johnny runs away one night and is drawn to the voice of an older man, Uncle Remus, who tells him stories about Br'er Rabbit. Through these tales, told partly in animation, Remus helps the boy make sense of his confusion and settle into his new life.

The film was directed by Wilfred Jackson, the eleventh of the seventeen features credited to him in chronological order, following Saludos Amigos and preceding Melody Time, with Harve Foster also directing. Walt Disney produced, and the screenplay was written by Morton Grant, Dalton S. Reymond and Maurice Rapf. The cast includes James Baskett as Uncle Remus and the voice of Br'er Fox, alongside Ruth Warrick, Bobby Driscoll, Luana Patten, Lucile Watson and Hattie McDaniel, among twenty-two credited cast members and a hundred credited crew.

Made by Walt Disney Productions on a budget of two million dollars, the film took about sixty-five million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.9 out of 10 from roughly sixteen thousand votes, and on TMDB 6.5 out of 10 from a much smaller number of votes, while its critics' rating stands at 6.4 out of 10 from sixteen reviews.
