The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is a 1949 animated Disney feature that pairs two separate stories drawn from British and American literature. In the first, based on Kenneth Grahame's novel, the wealthy and impulsive J. Thaddeus Toad of Toad Hall throws himself into one craze after another, most ruinously a passion for motor cars. His recklessness draws him into trouble with disreputable company, and his loyal friends Mole, Rat and Badger try to rescue him from the consequences of his own behaviour. The second story, from Washington Irving, moves to a small New England village, where the newly arrived schoolmaster Ichabod Crane courts the beautiful Katrina Van Tassel. His rival, the local bully Brom Bones, resents the newcomer's success with her, and the tale turns on the local legend of a headless horseman. Bing Crosby narrates the Sleepy Hollow segment, while Basil Rathbone narrates the Wind in the Willows portion; Eric Blore voices Mr. Toad.

The film is one of Disney's package features, released in 1949 and running just 68 minutes. Three directors worked on it: James Algar, Clyde Geronimi and Jack Kinney. For Geronimi it was the ninth of fifteen films he directed, following Melody Time and preceding Cinderella. Kinney had previously directed Pinocchio, Dumbo and several other Disney features. Erdman Penner wrote the screenplay, and Walt Disney produced.

The film took about 3 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a 6.9 rating from more than 17,000 votes, and on TMDB a 6.5 from 715 votes. A critics' rating of 7.4 from 17 reviews places it somewhat above the audience scores.
