Short description

Julio and Tenoch are seventeen-year-old best friends from very different Mexico City families, one wealthy and conservative, the other left-leaning. At a family wedding they meet Luisa, a Spanish woman in her late twenties, and flirt with her together. Partly as a joke, they invite her on a car trip to a beach they call Boca del Cielo, without being sure it exists or where it lies. Luisa has just received difficult news and wants a change, so she takes them up on the offer, forcing the two friends to improvise a route. The three set off across Mexico, and the journey becomes an education in friendship, sex and growing up, with consequences none of them foresees.

Alfonso Cuarón directed and wrote the screenplay with his brother Carlos Cuarón, and produced with Jorge Vergara. It followed A Little Princess (1995) and Great Expectations (1998) in Cuarón's filmography, before Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Children of Men, Gravity and Roma. Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna play Julio and Tenoch, with Maribel Verdú as Luisa, and Daniel Giménez Cacho provides narration.

Made for about 5 million dollars, the film took roughly 34 million worldwide, a strong return on its budget. On IMDb it holds 7.7 out of 10 from over 127,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 7.4 from around 1,800 votes. A critics' rating of 8.1 from 191 reviews places it above both audience scores.

What's left behind the scenes

  • As Gael García Bernal, who played the role of Julio Zapata, stated in one of his interviews, a well-known brand of shampoo was used to simulate semen in the masturbation scene.
  • The surnames of the film's characters coincide with those of famous historical figures from Mexico: Hernán Cortés (1485–1547), the Spanish conquistador who conquered Mexico; Emiliano Zapata (1879–1919), one of the leaders of the Mexican Revolution of 1910–1917; and Agustín de Iturbide (1783–1824), Emperor of Mexico (1822–1823).
