Raising Cain
Short description
Carter Nix is a child psychologist and a devoted family man, but his outward calm conceals a deeply fractured inner life shaped by his father's past experiments on him. In the present, Carter is drawn into a string of murders and kidnappings, while his wife Jenny begins an affair that puts her in danger from a husband whose mind is coming apart. The story unfolds through Carter's multiple personalities, chief among them the menacing Cain, in a thriller that moves between nightmare imagery and violent reality.
Brian De Palma directed and wrote the screenplay, with Gale Anne Hurd producing for Universal Pictures and Pacific Western. It was De Palma's fifteenth film as director, following The Bonfire of the Vanities and preceding Carlito's Way. John Lithgow plays Carter and the various personalities surrounding him, including Cain, Dr. Nix, Josh and Margo. Lolita Davidovich appears as Jenny, with Steven Bauer, Frances Sternhagen, Gregg Henry and Tom Bower among the supporting cast.
Made for a reported twelve million dollars, Raising Cain took in roughly thirty-seven million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.1 out of ten from about nineteen thousand votes, while on TMDB it stands at six out of ten from a much smaller pool of around four hundred. A critics' rating of 5.5 out of ten places it close to those audience scores, suggesting a mixed but not dismissive response.
