Commissioner Maigret investigates the murder of Berthier-Lagès, a prominent former ambassador found shot in his home. Alongside Lieutenant Janvier, the commissioner discovers a vast collection of letters revealing a romantic relationship lasting five decades between the victim and the Princess of Vuynes.
