Enigma

This documentary examines the contrasting public lives of April Ashley and Amanda Lear, two pioneers who navigated their female identities under intense scrutiny. While Ashley became known for openly embracing and sharing her transgender history, Lear spent decades deliberately hiding or denying her past. The film explores how these opposing approaches to identity and survival shaped their individual legacies and contributed to the broader development of trans culture.

Directed by Zackary Drucker, Enigma is the second film in a series of works that includes The Stroll and Mones. The production was a joint effort between the United States and Switzerland, involving HBO Documentary Films, Story Syndicate, Pacific Films, and Five All in the Fifth Entertainment. It was produced by Madison Passarelli, Douglas Banker, and Alex Garinger. The cast features Ashley and Lear appearing as themselves, alongside Marie-Pierre Pruvot, Allanah Starr, and Morgan M. Page.

Released on January 28, 2025, the film has a runtime of 94 minutes. It holds a rating of 6.2 on TMDB based on 15 votes.
