Short description
Raise Your Voice follows Terri Fletcher, a teenager from a small town who sings in her church choir. Her older brother Paul secretly submits an application on her behalf to a summer program at a performing arts academy in Los Angeles. After Paul dies in a car crash, Terri travels to the city against her father's wishes to attend the program, where she must adjust to an unfamiliar way of life and compete with more experienced students for a place at the school.
Sean McNamara directed the film, the fifth of 24 features he has directed, following The Even Stevens Movie and preceding The Cutting Edge: Going for the Gold. The screenplay is by Mitch Rotter and Sam Schreiber, and the cast includes Hilary Duff as Terri, Oliver James as her fellow student Jay Corgan, David Keith as her father Simon, Johnny Lewis, Rita Wilson and Dana Davis.
The film was released in 2004 and runs 107 minutes. Made for a budget of 15 million dollars, it earned the same amount worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 5.8 from around 30,000 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 6.6 from roughly 870 votes. A film critics' rating of 3.9 from 81 reviews places it well below the audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Initially, the project was titled "Heart of Summer", but since the release date was moved from August to October, the title was changed.
- Evan Rachel Wood and Jonathan Jackson were originally slated for the leading roles, but due to changes in the film’s shooting schedule, they dropped out of the project along with director James Hayman and actress Annie Potts, who had been cast as Terry’s mother. The film’s setting was subsequently moved from New York to Los Angeles.
- Rebecca De Mornay played the sculptor in the film. Before filming, she took lessons from Los Angeles sculptor Bruce Gray.
